So they know the comet is coming but don't do anything about it until it's in the paper. That's either very efficient news or very inefficient government. (So what else is new...) Maybe the astronomers decided to call the papers first to get the news-of-the-week bonus and just forgot to tell anyone else.
(Rather interesting that the heroine is aware of the problem already, and only takes a moment to locate the comet. With the sensitive senses she must have, she would have been the first one to spot it in the first place.)

I interpret it completely other way around. The fact that this superhero can save the planet just in a few seconds by walking outside, and she still is reluctant to give her services and would rather sit home drinking her coffee...

So the strip is about the selfishness of individuals, to me.

I agree, this is exactly how I read it. There's a lot of implied backstory here, which I really like.
My interpretation: some powerful being is on Earth, and humans found her. Afterwards they became wholly dependent on her and no longer do anything for themselves. It depresses her, but if she abandoned them now bad things would happen.

Personally, I really like this strip. Not just the art, but it seems like SCP had slowly drifted away from "make a good strip even if 100% the audience might not get it" to a more "tell everything, never show" style. I'm happy for the return!

I noticed the change in art quality too, but I had sort of thought it was intentional. At first the woman is very realistic in style and setting, but as the frames progress, the style become simplified like a comic book (which the plot in the end mirrors). I might just be reading too much into it (especially because of Kevin's comments below), but isn't over rationalizing what art criticism is all about?

Comics don't necessarily have to be humorous. They can also be witty, sarcastic, thought-provoking or questioning. To me this one says: "If mankind had the possiblity to get every problem they had solved by someone else, they would go for it."

Besides like good literature a good comic doesn't have to approach everybody. To me this is a thought-provoking comic and it doesn't need humor to have the right to exist ;)

I think the point is that she's tired because humanity doesn't do anything for themselves anymore. Instead, every time they have a problem, they just expect her to fix it, instead of fixing it themselves.

Anyway, I didn't read the newspaper the first time around. I have to remember you put clues in your panels and I should read them! Now as I type the comment, I finally see it, but I still got it without the paper.
And people wonder why I don't want super powers...

nah, she is a super hero who is just bored with her role. blasting the comet is trivial for her, nothing makes her 'reach' any more, no challanges.

I think it may be a bit of the 'Dr. Manhattan' feelings from the "Watchmen" graphic novel... starting to feel used, people presume, and the thanks isn't even sincere.

You're not alone fleeb....I mean, I'm assuming she's an alien protected by the government who protects Earth from cosmic disasters, and is getting tired of doing ALL the work? Maybe it hurts her eyes? er, if there's anything more to get I'm not getting it, I don't find it very funny to tell the truth.

However I do like the art a lot, but humor in comics matters much more to me than the quality of art. Sorry to be such a tough critic.

It's funny how in the preview version of the strip I totally thought the helicopter was in the air but here it is so clear that is isn't.

Yeah, the effort level definitely dropped off as the strip progressed. I eventually fell into "just get it done" mode. Hopefully I'll get a bit faster at the fancy colouring and will be able to keep things up at a consistent level.

And you're right about the photoreference. The people in the first two panels are based on some photos that I took. In panel 4 I decided to wing it, with predictable results.
